Born in the mixed Armenian-Turkish village of Garmari in Chemishgazag, Sarkis Narzakian became an Armenian revolutionary during the reign of Abdulhamid II. After imprisonment, he fled to the United States where he continued his political activities and got involved in the American labor movement.
